Shock of the New: Revolutions in art around 1900 with Vivienne Morrell
$94.00 - $112.00
3 June to 24 June
4 week class
The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw rapid changes in art – with one ‘ism’ supplanting another, through Impressionism, Cubism, Expressionism, etc. I will talk about some key moments and artists in this period. Discussion will include questions such as: How did artists react to challenges of new technology, such as photography; how were they influenced by other artists and changes in art materials and practices? How did viewers react to ‘new’ art? Topics include: setting the scene of ferment in Paris (1860s to 1914); artists Cezanne; Gauguin; Monet; Matisse; Klimt and Vienna; Kandinsky, Klee and Germany.
This course is designed for anyone interested in learning about art history, especially the development of Modernism and some well-known artists from the turn of the 19th and 20th century.
About Vivienne Morrell
After gaining an MA in Art History, I worked for a few years at Historic Places Trust (now called Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga), researching and writing reports on heritage buildings in the greater Wellington region. In 2016, I became a visitor host and tour guide at Te Papa Tongarewa National Museum of NZ. I have been on the committee of Historic Places Wellington for several years. I enjoy researching and learning about Wellington’s history and sharing this with others.
