Inspired by Boro - Jacket with Clare Smith

$87.00 - $104.00
Sunday 13 April
10:00am to 4pm
Anyone interested in simple hand stitching especially sashiko and boro.

Make the panels for a simple jacket or vest with boro or kantha style running stitch. A simple jacket pattern will be provided but class participants are welcome to use their own as log as they have made a toile ( a test version) to check for fit. The panels for the jacket will be laid out separately in the class and then most of the hand - stitching will be completed at home. Sashiko and boro stitch patterns will be shown in class. There is an opportunity for students to attend the Slow stitch group at KACC to get together and work on their jacket panels. Completion of the jacket and opportunities to get help with this will be discussed in class.

It is also possible to make a wallhanging, cushion or bag in this class if you don’t have time to complete the stitching on a whole jacket.

About Clare Smith:

I am a Textile artist and costume maker who specializes in surface design (dyeing and printing on fabric). I have a Teaching Diploma,  a Graduate Diploma in Visual arts from Whitireia art school, and a Diploma in Costume Construction from Toi Whakaari. (the New Zealand Drama school). Between 2018-2022 , I studied Raranga (Maori Weaving) at Te Wananga o Aotearoa.

I have been teaching fabric dyeing, screenprinting, fabric collage and machine quilting since 1996. I currently teach a block course in costume dyeing and finishing at the New Zealand Drama school and exhibit my quilts and wallhangings internationally.  Over the last 3 years I have also been weaving kete (basket weaving).

Learning Outcomes:

  • Know a little about the history of boro and sashiko
  • Experimented with layering and cutting back of fabrics
  • Experimented with running stitch
  • Produced a small quilt ready for further stitching at home

Needs list:

  • Jacket pattern - A pattern is provided for a jacket the same as I made (see picture) sizes 10-16 (approximately).  If you are a non standard 10-16 or prefer a different style of jacket then please feel free to bring your own patternI(test by making a ‘toile’ in calico before you come to class)
  • 2.5  metres pre washed flanelette or an old flannel sheet (or pattern requirement if more) this acts as the batting and stabilises your pieces for stitching.
  • Equivalent of at least 2 metres of fabric pieces for jacket top layer (your choice of colours)
  • If you intend to do as much stitching as the class sample you will need approximately 200metres of sashiko thread or pearl cotton in chosen colour. Most quilt shops sell sashiko thread.
  • Paper scissors
  • Sewing machine, extension cord (sewing around your pieces by machine speeds up the tacking process)
  • Walking foot for your machine if you have one
  • Sashiko needles or chenille 22.
  • Fabric Scissors, Pins, unpicker, spare machine needles etc.
  • Machine thread to match your fabric
  • Chalk pencils or other fabric marker.
  • 2 metres of cheap thin interfacing or 2 metres of newsprint paper (for tracing the pattern)

Alternative - No sewing machine option

  • A pre made jacket which is bigger than you would normally wear and which you can stitch through. Example – a light weight denim  or linen jacket
  • Sashiko thread, needles, scissors etc.

- We don't pay credit card fees of approximately 2%
- It's much quicker for the Centre Manager to administrate

On completing your order you'll be given the bank account number.
