Wonky Buildings: pen and watercolour sketchbook - with Andrew James

$112.00 - $135.00
Thursdays - 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm
27 August to 17 September
4-week course

Drawing straight lines is boring, and I can't be bothered finding vanishing points. This class is about pushing proportions and leaning into any mistakes we make, so our drawings are more fun and freer.

We'll draw with pen, learn how to split up complex buildings and scenes into their components, and bring the drawings to life with watercolour.

You'll leave with a bunch of drawings in your sketchbook, but more importantly, you'll have a system for approaching a drawing that will set you up for success, even in overwhelming or complicated scenes.

Beginning with the foundation of bold lines, we'll build a visual language and learn some tricks about how buildings work.

We'll gradually make our way from garden sheds to ornate facades. We'll also turn our hand to watercolours and learn a system for thinking about and mixing colours. We'll use those colours to bring our buildings to life.

About Andrew James:

I first got into drawing to have a travel sketchbook. I accidentally became obsessed with sketchbooks. 10 years on, drawing has made my life more fun and interesting. I genuinely believe that anyone can learn to paint and draw—life is better when you draw it.

My teaching is empowering and practical and delivered with enthusiasm and humour.

Materials:

Waterproof black pen: I use and recommend a Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen.

Coloured markers: A couple of colours can be useful. I'll mostly use Tombow brush pens

Watercolour paints: Whatever you usually use will be fine!
In case you're interested, the colours on my palette are French ultramarine, transparent yellow, magenta, Prussian blue, cerulean blue, raw sienna, and cadmium red light. Cerulean is Windsor and Newton, and the rest are Schmincke. But you absolutely do NOT need to rush out and buy those.

The Daniel Smith sketcher palette is a good starter set if you don't have any paints.

Brush: Whatever you usually use will be fine. If you're after a decent, affordable option, I suggest the Da Vinci Junior round in size 10.

Water jar: Something that you won't mix up with your coffee cup.

Support board: corflute or plywood to support the paper

Masking tape: to secure the paper to the board.

Sketchbook or loose sheets paper: for working drawings.

Watercolour paper: Hot press paper is better for drawing on. I like Fabriano Artistico 300GSM, but other brands are fine, too.
