Secret Art Walk by Paul Kitteridge

· Interest Groups

Eleven not -to-be-denied walkers, after borrowing the warmth of the Supreme Court foyer for briefing and issue of Delyse’s lovingly-produced maps and info, set off along Lambton Quay in a drizzly southerly. Interspersed by little bits of actual walking, we were treated to a serial fairy cave of mostly corporate modern paintings and sculptures. We also admired historic photos of:

· a crowd of men outside the ‘Evening Post’ awaiting the 1931 election result

· the remains of Plimmer’s Ark and

· a swinging-dancers mural.

On impulse, the weather by then being fine and our spirits ditto, we went up in the Cable Car to see the murals and the tunnels’ flashing lights. Down again, we climbed into Clark’s cafe to satisfy the inner person and have a good chat before striding to the last goal, the Museum Art Hotel in Cable Street. Here, we were able to enjoy Chris Parkin’s wonderful collection of 60 or so New Zealand paintings and sculptures, a fine climax to a fascinating voyage of discovery in our home town. Helen’s return to the group completed the enjoyment. Good on you, Helen.
