
Bookbinding: binding over tapes - with Clare Smith

Learn how to make an A5 sized multi-section bound book using a method similar to coptic binding but sewn over tapes for stability. This book could be made as a sketchbook using watercolour or cartridge paper.
The book cover could be covered with paper or fabric of your choice.
About Clare Smith:
I am a Textile artist and costume maker who specializes in surface design (dyeing and printing on fabric). I have a Teaching Diploma, a Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts from Whitireia Art School, and a Diploma in Costume Construction from Toi Whakaari. (the New Zealand Drama school). Between 2018-2022, I studied Raranga (Maori Weaving) at Te Wananga o Aotearoa.
I have been teaching fabric dyeing, screen printing, fabric collage, and machine quilting since 1996. I currently teach a block course in costume dyeing and finishing at the New Zealand Drama School and exhibit my quilts and wallhangings internationally. Over the last 3 years, I have also been weaving kete (basket weaving).
Needs list:
- 1 A3 or A4 Sketchbook of desired paper, including the cardboard backing.
- Paper could be watercolour paper, cartridge paper, recycled prints, or mixed papers.
- (Example – A3 Bockingford Watercolour pad for pages, the cardboard back cover will be used for the book covers.)
- If bringing sheets of paper that are not part of a pad, you will need 1 sheet of greyboard (A4 or A3) 2-3mm thick.
- Paper scissors
- Craft Knife with snap-off blades
- Steel ruler (if you have one)
- Cutting mat (if you have one)
- Darning needle
- Handmade paper or wrapping paper(A3 size) for covers OR quilting weight fabric (Fat quarter size), and a fat quarter of fusible webbing.
- A knife with a smooth handle or a bone folder.
$5 Materials fee included in the cost of the class covers:
Leather or tape, Pearl cotton 3 and waxed threads, glue, and some extra papers.
