ANTIQUE APPRECIATION GROUP

History of Tobacco Smoking

· Interest Groups
broken image

The session on History of Tobacco Smoking started with a show of hands for who had previously smoked (about 50% of those attending) against current smokers - NONE!

Some interesting facts emerged including smoking being punishable by death in Turkey in the 16th century and banned in holy places by the Pope about the same time because it evoked feelings too close to sexual pleasure! Early cigarette advertising made monstrous claims with doctors endorsing brands and many claims made re the benefits as a slimming aid.

Members of the group found many objects to show, including cigarette lighters, boxes and cases; cigar boxes; cigarette cards; numerous ashtrays and novelty items.

Next Meeting: 2nd Aug @ 10am

Topic: 20th century glass
