Sketching the Everyday: How to keep an illustrated record of your life -with Andrew James
$191.00 - $230.00
Mondays, 29 July to 16 September, 7:30pm to 9:30pm
8 week class
A fun and empowering introduction to keeping a sketchbook. We cover doodling, objects, characters, and scenes. You’ll leave well on the way to finishing your first sketchbook, and with all the skills and confidence to begin recording your own life. This course is suitable for total beginners but there is plenty for experienced artists, too.
Andrew James is a self-taught sketchbook artist. He has been obsessively recording his daily life in little books for close to a decade. He wants to share the kind of magic that this can bring into your life. Andrew has run similar workshops for Watercolour NZ and Wellington Art Club.

Course Outline:
- STARTING + DOODLES: How to start a sketchbook – Making a title page as a gentle introduction. Try a variety of doodling and mark making ideas to get people drawing without being too worried.
- OBJECTS: Learn Two exercises/approaches for drawing objects. Fast and Slow, and Filling in. Learn how to create an “object collage” to tell the story of a collection, and a chance to make you own.
- CHARACTERS + PEOPLE: We start with doodled characters like fish, birds, and monsters then move on to drawing people using a shape-first approach.
- SCENES: First, an exercise in composition based on finding little windows in your world, then another exercise in more abstract composition. Finally, discussion and demo of some ways to add depth to a scene without worrying about perspective, and a chance to do your own scene drawing.
