Introduction to Native Plant Papermaking with Rob Kennedy, Sunday 16 July 1-4pm

110.00 - 130.00
Discover the hidden world of native plant fibre and learn how to make your own paper from scratch. Following an introduction to basic papermaking skills, participants will hone their skills by making several products including sheets of paper, cards, letter writing stationery and more.
In addition to the practical skills, the workshop covers technical aspects of preparing your own materials using simple appliances and commonly found plants. You’ll also learn about some of the theory and history of papermaking, and what materials other than wood pulp can be used.
Finished harakeke paper typically has a light straw colour and its own unique texture and feel. The paper is suitable for a wide range of uses.

- Be able to make paper from a suspension of pulp in water

- Understand the how and why of the pressing and drying stages

- Appreciate the value of native fibre plants as a resource

Materials:

All materials are included in the cost of the course.

Participants should wear “work clothes”, closed shoes, and be willing to get their hands wet.

About the Tutor:

With a background in environmental science and photography, Rob Kennedy has turned a passion for native ecological revegetation into a business contributing to the care of native plantings while creating beautiful materials and fostering an ancient craft. Rob views native plant papermaking as a catalyst to engage people with environmental improvement through native plantings that can both provide the raw materials for cultural use and support the growth of biodiversity values.

Being largely self-taught, Rob has been a papermaker since 2015 and enjoys the challenge of continuously improving his methods, developing his own equipment, and optimising the papermaking process for quality, efficiency and sustainable resource use.
