The castle is located in the Northwest corner of the Isle of Skye – part of the Inner Hebrides. Up in the Highlands away from better known cities Glasgow on the west and Edinburgh in the east. For over 800 years it has been the seat of Clan McLeod. The castle is built on a mass of basalt rock rising about 30ft from the shores of Loch Dunvegan. Until 1748, the only access was by sea and then a steep climb up a long flight of steps. The most celebrated heirlooms are the ancient Fairy Flag, Sir Rory Mor's ceremonial drinking horn and Flora MacDonald's corset and lock of Bonnie Price Charlie's hair.
