Painting an apple a day...

Robyn's evening watercolour class explores tone and form

July 31, 2020

Wednesday's evening watercolour class with Robyn focused on painting apples. This made a change from the landscapes, seascapes and botanical series of previous weeks. Although remarkably simple in concept, the challenge was to observe their true shape and unique characteristics. Like drawing practice the temptation is to capture what we think an apple is rather than what is actually there. As we used the layers of tone to capture and develop the form without drawing at all, our early attempts fell short of our expectations. However that is where Robyn's gentle encouragement to try another again and again helped us to improve on the early attempts. As always we marvelled at how different each student's work was.
